You’ve signed the lease. Follow these four tips for an easier apartment move.

Job situations and lifestyle changes resulting from the pandemic are prompting more Americans to consider relocating in 2021, according to market research company, The NPD Group

For some, the flexibility of remote work has opened the door to new possibilities if there is no longer a need to live close to the office. Extended time at home has also led individuals to think more about how they utilize their space, including what they need and want from their homes.

This influx of moves will likely happen soon. In a typical year, the majority of moves occur between April and September, also known as peak moving season. Whether it is a move across the country or just across town, the process of relocating can feel overwhelming and exhausting. And for those looking to move into an apartment, there are some additional considerations to keep in mind. Here are some simple ways to make the process easier.

Pack or purge?

It is never too early to start assessing your belongings to determine what stays and what goes. Making those decisions pre-move will help lighten your load on moving day. As you start to pack the items that you’re taking with you, clearly label the outside of each box to help expedite the unpacking process in your new place.

Perhaps you took measurements for future furniture placement during your apartment tour. If not, you can always request a quick virtual tour to help visualize your new space and request that measurements be sent to you via email to help with your planning. If you decide to sell furniture or other belongings, there are a number of easy ways to get the word out. Consider posting your items and connecting with local buyers through apps and online marketplaces to keep the process contactless.

Map out your move

If you require a mover, start by asking friends and family for recommendations. If you are moving into an apartment, you can also request a list of preferred moving partners. Call the moving companies well in advance of your move-in date to guarantee availability, especially during the busy spring and summer months. Request a detailed estimate and inquire about any hidden fees as well as insurance coverage. For extra peace of mind, ask your moving company about the precautions being taken to help ensure a safe move during the pandemic.

Also, be aware of any property guidelines for move-in day. Many apartments will provide specific instructions for when and how you can move in your belongings. These guidelines are in place to help make the process easier on new residents while also being considerate of neighbors.

Prioritize your to-do list for move-in day

Make a detailed checklist for move-in day. It should include your immediate to-do items as a new resident, including setting up utilities, obtaining important contact information for property management, maintenance issues and emergencies, as well as learning the ins and outs of things like trash removal, parking, and mail/package delivery. Address any needs and concerns with your property manager and do not hesitate to ask any questions you have.

Get settled at your own pace

It can take several months to feel truly settled after moving into a new place, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start feeling at home on day one. Start with the essentials. Have your cleaning supplies handy so you can prep and sanitize your space as needed prior to unpacking.  Another top priority should be setting up your bed, as you will want a good night’s rest after a busy day of moving. You will also need easy access to your toiletries and basic cooking supplies to get you through your first few days.

With your essentials in place, next you can turn your attention to arranging and decorating. You can take your time with things like determining optimal furniture placement, deciding where to hang pictures and artwork, and setting up electronics while still living comfortably day-to-day.

And of course, you can begin enjoying your new neighborhood and apartment community, meeting fellow residents and exploring all there is to see and do around your new home.

Avoid unneeded stress on moving day by planning ahead. Although you might encounter a challenge or two along the way, once you get through the process, you will find that apartment living offers the maintenance-free lifestyle (plus the perfect home office) you were seeking. Welcome home.
