Redwood Living, Inc. offers neighborhoods designed with sustainability in mind

This week marks the 52nd observance of Earth Day, a reminder that finding ways to protect the environment should be top of mind for all. At Redwood Living, Inc., this mindset is a familiar one.

Each of Redwood’s more than 100 neighborhoods and 13,000 apartment homes is built with sustainability in mind. By integrating elements that meet and exceed energy efficiency standards, Redwood is able to not only build strong homes that last, but offer residents the comfort of knowing they are living in a thoughtfully designed and constructed home. The carefully selected products and strategic designs of each Redwood apartment home’s interior and exterior help reduce the impact each neighborhood has on the environment.

Here’s a closer look at what Redwood has integrated into its neighborhoods:

Quality of life
A central benefit of every Redwood Neighborhood is its classification as a medium-density community. In contrast to high-density communities, as one might find with urban apartment properties, Redwood Neighborhoods offer open green spaces that establish a connection to nature and support operational and maintenance best practices concerning water consumption, energy, and toxic cleaners. Additionally, the average apartment home size helps maximize its IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality).

Superior construction
Redwood Neighborhoods and apartment homes are built with carefully selected sustainable materials. Concrete driveways and drive aisles significantly reduce ongoing maintenance and the need for the annual application of toxic asphalt sealers or patching. Concrete flooring systems utilize overall lower amounts of non-renewable materials.

Redwood apartment homes offer fully insulated exterior wall and ceiling systems that enhance energy efficiency and often exceed local building codes. Additionally, Redwood utilizes fabrication techniques that promote less waste product, reducing the necessary landfill space.

Mindful product selection
Interior
All homes at Redwood feature ENERGY STAR-rated windows, appliances and low-flow plumbing fixtures. These sustainable components and appliances are purchased in bulk, reducing shipping congestion.

Exterior
Redwood utilizes long-lasting exterior vinyl siding as one of the major exterior sheathing components, reducing premature expiration and the need for replacement. The apartment homes also feature roofing systems designed and built to outlast the industry average, reducing landfill waste, among other related sustainability benefits.

Ongoing energy efficiencies
Apartment homes built by Redwood are 40-45 percent more energy efficient than a standard home, helping to save residents 30-80 percent on energy bills. On average, a Redwood home boasts an impressive score of 60 on the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index, the nationally recognized system for inspecting and calculating a home’s energy performance.

Redwood seeks to achieve a lower-than-average residential building carbon footprint with its use of high-efficiency HVAC units. Additionally, LED lighting fixtures do not create harmful chemicals, give off low amounts of heat, and provide low energy consumption.

Giving back green
Not only does Redwood build sustainable apartments, but the company also supports organizations with green-focused missions. For Earth Day 2021, Redwood has partnered with One Tree Planted, an environmentally conscious non-profit that supports tree planting initiatives worldwide. Redwood employees raised enough money to plant more than 600 trees, and the company is matching that, resulting in more than 1,200 trees that will be planted in national forests across the country.
